Before the 7.0-magnitude earthquake of January 12, Haiti already
had 380,000 orphaned children. The deaths of parents crushed under
rubble could see the number of orphans double, up to as many as
one million, not counting other vulnerable children (OVC). Child
Laborer/Restavec children, 250,000. Disabled children, 525,000.
Two hundred thousand or more are in orphanages or institutionalized
group settings, (source FHI/USAID). This is a substantially higher
proportion of orphaned children in institutionalized settings
than is found in most other countries. In the long run, the institutional
approach has serious negative implications to their lives.
We
believe all children deserve the opportunity to thrive, not just
survive. Through ARCF’s endeavors we have seen this proven
true. People are society’s most valuable resource. It is mankinds
responsibility to recognize this, and help build communities where
we create capabilities not dependencies, where every child can have
a future and dream... |
